Vasyl CHEKHUN

Head of the Ukrainian Society of Cancer Researchers (USCR)

Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of medical sciences, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, laureate of the award named by RE. Kavetsky National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Chairman of the academic council, advisor to the directorate of the institute

Head of the tumor process monitoring and therapy design department

Biography

He was born on November 15, 1956 in the village of Trostinka, Kyiv region.

Ukrainian oncologist, radiobiologist, full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since May 6, 2006, specializing in Experimental Oncology, Department of Biochemistry, Physiology and Molecular Biology).

After graduating in 1980 from the medical faculty of the Kyiv Medical Institute named after Oleksandr Bogomolets, he was directed to scientific work at the Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology named after R. E. Kavetsky of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where he made his way to the directorship.

He studies molecular mechanisms of drug resistance formation, methods of predicting individual tolerability of the malignant process and optimization of anticancer therapy.

Scientific research is devoted to the pathogenetic bases of experimental therapy of malignant tumors.

For the first time, he developed a technology for increasing the selectivity of the action of cytostatics by using specific sorbents and inducers of the activity of microsomal oxidation enzymes, defined and substantiated the mechanisms of the formation of drug resistance

The youngest academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Vasyl Chehun is a leading scientist in the field of oncology and pathophysiology, founder of the scientific school "Molecular bases and medical-biological problems of pharmacoresistance", member of the board of the European Community of Anticancer Institutes, director and later chairman of the scientific council of the Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology named after RE. Kavetsky of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is the youngest academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Main areas of scientific activity

  • study of mechanisms and effectiveness of anticancer drugs, study of molecular mechanisms of interaction, transport and transformation of nanoparticles in biological systems, which is a prerequisite for the creation of targeted therapy, development of new systems for directed transport of cytotoxic nanocomponents, study of mechanisms of their action in overcoming drug resistance;

  • for the first time, the technology of increasing the selectivity of the action of cytostatics by using specific sorbents and inducers of the activity of microsomal oxidation enzymes was developed;

  • it has been proven that coordination compounds of platinum, in addition to genetic ones, trigger a number of epigenomic mechanisms that determine their therapeutic and toxic effects; justified the mechanisms of formation of drug resistance;

  • a vector system is proposed that affects the cascade of regulatory processes of signal transduction, which allows increasing the sensitivity of tumor cells to the action of cytostatics.
